As Americans continue to face the affordable housing crisis, we need Congress’s help! Rental costs are rising quickly. Pair that with record high inflation and housing shortages it is nearly impossible to find an affordable, decent, and safe place to call home. However, NAHRO has solutions that work – and we need Congress to continue to fund these vital programs so the crisis becomes manageable.
In the third week of August Advocacy, we are sending letters to increase housing voucher effectiveness. Housing Choice Vouchers are an incredible aid for thousands of Americans, but many recipients still find themselves without a home. As the country tries to remedy the lack of available housing, it is even more imperative to ensure vouchers remain effective and accepted! Our Week 3 advocacy letter urges Congress to:
- Provide resident services to families through the use of voucher and administrative accounts
- Make it easier for families to find homes by allowing the pre-inspection of units
- Increase PHA payment standard discretion for vouchers to keep up with rental inflation
Why it matters: The voucher program is effective when utilization is high and PHAs have the tools to help families find units. Congress has the power to tweak the voucher program and increase its effectiveness in our communities. When you ask your legislators to make common sense changes to the voucher program, it could result in higher utilization rates and more supported families.
